John Thomas Scholl, known by most as Tom, passed away on Aug. 29 at his home in Lithopolis, Ohio. He was 79.
He was a lifetime member of the Hocking Valley Motorcycle Club and a charter life member of the American Motorcycle Association. He was one of the men whom the Jake-Tom Enduro was named for.
Not only was Scholl a racer, he was the proud owner of J&J Cycle Sales located in Lithopolis, Ohio from 1969 to 1980.
His son, Mike, shared that his father was part of the first annual Little Burr Enduro layout crew in 1958 and competed twice in the Jackpine Enduro. His first attempt was in the B “Sidecar” class, and he made it 224 miles on the first day. His “Snorton Norton” gave up on him, but to his surprise only three rigs beat him! One or two finished the event. The following year he raced a 200 Triumph Cub and scored a top ten finish.
He loved hearing stories shared in the BEER Map Group (Brave -Energetic-Enduro-Riders) on Facebook, a group that his son started to share racing memories.
He was also former volunteer of the Bloom Twp. Fire Dept. and retired as a Road Supervisor for Bloom Township with over 25 years of service.
A memorial service is scheduled for Sept. 11 from 1-3 p.m. at the Lithopolis Methodist Church. Memorial donations may be given to Fairhope in Lancaster, Ohio.
A celebration of life party will be held at Hocking Valley Motorcycle Club on Oct. 22, featuring a cookout, BEER Map Reunion and memorabilia. More details to come at a later date.
Our condolences go out the his family and friends. Tom will be missed by many.
